An Absolute Legacy
Refined across three generations

Interview with Mathias Vella; Showroom Manager, Absolute Bathrooms

Some companies inherit a name. Others inherit knowledge. For Absolute Bathrooms, the most valuable legacy has not been a brand, but generations of experience working with natural stone and surface materials.

That heritage can be traced back three generations to Mathias Vella’s grandfather, Nazzareno Vella, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Malta’s natural stone industry and one of the founding brothers behind the Halmann Group.

For decades, the Vella family played a significant role in shaping Malta’s understanding of natural stone, surface materials and architectural finishes. While Absolute Bathrooms would eventually establish its own independent identity, the material knowledge, craftsmanship and commitment to quality cultivated through that heritage remain deeply embedded within the company today.

Equally influential has been the family’s long-standing relationship with Italy, a country internationally recognised for its excellence in natural stone, ceramics, bathroom design and manufacturing. Through carefully developed partnerships with Italian suppliers and manufacturers, Absolute Bathrooms has built a portfolio that combines Mediterranean design sensibilities with the technical standards and production quality for which Italian products are renowned.

Today, that offering extends well beyond natural stone. Alongside marble, granite and quartzite, the showroom presents an extensive selection of Italian ceramic surfaces, terrazzo collections, large-format porcelain slabs, sanitaryware, mixers and wellness solutions sourced from respected European brands. The result is a business that remains rooted in generations of material expertise while responding to the evolving needs of contemporary homeowners, designers, architects and developers.

For Mathias Vella, however, the story extends beyond products and materials. It is ultimately a story about continuity: preserving generations of accumulated knowledge while adapting to the changing demands of modern interiors, contemporary lifestyles and an increasingly discerning clientele.randfather.

It is a legacy that Mathias, now 37 and serving as Showroom Manager at Absolute Bathrooms, knows well. Today, Absolute transforms carefully selected natural stone slabs into bespoke architectural and interior elements, complementing this capability with a comprehensive range of ceramic surfaces, bathroom solutions and finishing products.

Having entered the family business at a young age, he was never afforded a shortcut to responsibility. Instead, he was expected to learn the trade from the ground up, gaining first-hand experience across the various operational aspects of the business before gradually assuming greater responsibilities.

His first roles involved assisting with deliveries and warehouse operations. From there, he progressed into production, working directly with marble processing and finishing before eventually moving into sales and showroom management. The experience provided something increasingly rare in today’s marketplace: a practical understanding of every stage of the process, from raw materials and fabrication to customer service and project delivery.

“the company was created with a clear objective: to provide clients with carefully selected bathroom solutions, natural stone, surface materials and bespoke finishing products supported by specialist expertise”

Today, that experience continues to shape the way Absolute Bathrooms operates.

GROWING INTO ITS OWN

Although the company’s roots extend back decades, Absolute Bathrooms itself is a relatively young business. Established in 2014, the company was created with a clear objective: to provide clients with carefully selected bathroom solutions, natural stone, surface materials and bespoke finishing products supported by specialist expertise.

Initially modest in scale, the business grew steadily before reaching a significant turning point in 2019, when it relocated to its current premises. “The biggest change came in 2019 when we shifted here,” Mathias explains. “That’s when the business started growing.”

“the company imports raw slabs which are subsequently cut, shaped, polished, finished and customised within its own Maltese facility”

The move provided a larger showroom, improved accessibility and greater visibility. More importantly, it created the platform from which the company could further develop one of its most distinctive strengths: customisation.

Today, while the company continues to offer a comprehensive range of sanitaryware, mixers, baths, cabinetry, ceramic surfaces and wellness solutions, its identity has evolved considerably beyond that of a conventional bathroom retailer. Indeed, many clients now refer to the company simply as “Absolute” – a reflection of an offering that extends well beyond bathrooms alone.

Exclusive partnerships with respected Italian and European manufacturers, including several brands represented solely by the company within the Maltese market; complement a carefully curated portfolio of products spanning bathrooms, interiors and outdoor living spaces. At the same time, Absolute’s expertise in natural stone and bespoke fabrication provides a distinctive capability that sets it apart within an increasingly competitive sector.

BEYOND THE BATHROOM

Despite its name, Absolute Bathrooms today offers considerably more than traditional bathroom products alone. Alongside sanitaryware, mixers, cabinetry, ceramic surfaces and wellness solutions, the company has developed a particularly strong reputation for natural stone processing and bespoke fabrication.

Directly behind the showroom lies a manufacturing facility equipped with CNC machinery, water-jet cutting technology and specialised processing equipment capable of transforming raw natural stone slabs into highly customised architectural elements.

Rather than relying primarily on imported finished pieces, Absolute’s approach centres on the sourcing, selection and processing of natural stone slabs. Working with specialist suppliers in Italy, the company imports raw slabs which are subsequently cut, shaped, polished, finished and customised within its own Maltese facility according to the specific requirements of each project. The investment has enabled the company to maintain a level of control rarely found among conventional bathroom suppliers. Indeed, “we can customise everything,” Mathias assured us.

The capability extends beyond straightforward cutting. Feature walls, vanity tops, staircases, bespoke surfaces, framed niches, wall cladding and architectural details can all be manufactured and finished in-house, reducing lead times while giving architects, designers and clients significantly greater flexibility.

For Absolute, the ability to control both material selection and fabrication is not merely a technical advantage. It forms part of a broader philosophy centred on tailoring solutions to individual projects rather than forcing projects to conform to standard carried products.

SELECTING THE STONE

A significant differentiating factor lies in the way the company approaches both natural stone and ceramic surfaces. Absolute Bathrooms today offers an extensive range of marble, granite, quartzite, terrazzo and Italian ceramic collections sourced through a carefully curated network of suppliers, manufacturers and quarry operators.

Yet Mathias is quick to point out that quality is never simply a matter of product range. Natural stone remains a material defined by character. Veining, colour, texture and movement can vary significantly, even between slabs originating from the same block. For that reason, slab selection forms a central part of the process.

“Once selected and imported, the slab is processed within Absolute’s own facility, where it can be transformed into a wide variety of bespoke architectural and interior elements”

Rather than ordering stone by type alone, clients are often able to participate directly in the selection of the actual slab that will ultimately form part of their project. Working closely with specialist suppliers, Absolute reviews individual slabs prior to purchase, allowing clients to evaluate the precise material that best suits their aesthetic and technical requirements. “Nothing is brought down at random,” Mathias explains.

Once selected and imported, the slab is processed within Absolute’s own facility, where it can be transformed into a wide variety of bespoke architectural and interior elements. The result is a process that prioritises suitability, quality and craftsmanship over volume. Whether supplying a private residence, a hospitality project or a large-scale development, the objective remains the same: ensuring that materials perform as impressively in reality as they do in concept.

BRIDGING TWO MATERIAL WORLDS

One of Absolute Bathrooms’ most distinctive strengths stems from its heritage in natural stone and its ability to combine traditional materials with contemporary ceramic surfaces.

While modern porcelain and ceramic products offer outstanding durability and practicality, they inevitably come with limitations. Dimensions are largely predetermined by the manufacturer, edge treatments can be restrictive and certain design details remain difficult to execute convincingly using ceramics alone. Natural stone, by contrast, offers considerably greater freedom.

“The company’s experience in both sectors allows it to combine the practicality of contemporary ceramic surfaces with the warmth, individuality and customisation potential of natural stone”

Through cutting, shaping, polishing and finishing, it can be adapted to create bespoke corners, framed niches, vanity tops, feature walls and architectural details that would be difficult – or in some cases impossible – to achieve using standard ceramic products.

Rather than viewing stone and ceramics as competing materials, Absolute sees them as complementary components within a broader design palette. The company’s experience in both sectors allows it to combine the practicality of contemporary ceramic surfaces with the warmth, individuality and customisation potential of natural stone. For architects, interior designers, developers and homeowners alike, this creates opportunities that extend well beyond product selection. It allows materials to be integrated more creatively, more cohesively and with a far greater degree of personalisation.

WORKING COLLABORATIVELY

As projects become increasingly sophisticated, collaboration has become an essential part of their work. Absolute Bathrooms regularly works alongside architects and interior designers, particularly on projects involving bespoke stone applications, terrazzo and customised surface solutions.

Rather than viewing these relationships as transactional, Mathias describes them as collaborative. Design professionals frequently seek input regarding material suitability, fabrication possibilities and practical execution. Equally, the company’s manufacturing capabilities allow creative concepts to move from drawing board to finished installation with fewer compromises.

“It’s nice because they call and ask for certain opinions before going for certain proposals,” he says. “They appreciate the expertise on certain materials.” For a business built upon decades of accumulated material knowledge, such collaborations represent a natural extension of its strengths.

A CURATED OFFERING

While natural stone has become one of the company’s most distinctive specialisations, it represents only part of the wider Absolute proposition. The showroom brings together an extensive selection of ceramic surfaces, including collections from leading Italian manufacturers such as Fioranese, Edimax and Coem, together with sanitaryware, Emmevi mixers, cabinetry, shower systems and wellness products sourced from established European manufacturers; several of which are exclusively represented in Malta by Absolute, reinforcing the company’s commitment to quality, design and long-term value.

This breadth of offering allows clients to approach projects holistically, sourcing complementary materials and products through a single specialist partner while benefiting from their expert guidance. Whether furnishing a private residence, a hospitality project or a commercial development, the objective remains consistent: combining aesthetic quality, practical performance and technical expertise to create spaces that are both functional and enduring.

LOOKING AHEAD

Despite significant growth over the past decade, Absolute Bathrooms remains focused on consolidation rather than expansion for its own sake. The company’s ambition is not simply to become larger, but to continue strengthening its position within a niche defined by customisation, craftsmanship and specialist expertise.

For Mathias, that ambition carries a personal dimension. As a third generation member of the family to build a career around stone and surface materials, Mathias is acutely aware of the responsibility that comes with preserving hard-earned knowledge while adapting it to the demands of a changing market.

“(Mathias) is acutely aware of the responsibility that comes with preserving hard-earned knowledge while adapting it to the demands of a changing market”

For him, continuity is not simply about maintaining a family tradition. It is about ensuring that the expertise, craftsmanship and attention to detail accumulated over decades continue to create value for clients, architects, designers and developers alike.

Looking ahead, Absolute Bathrooms remains committed to strengthening its position as a trusted partner for bespoke surface solutions, interiors and bathroom environments, combining traditional material expertise with the innovation and flexibility demanded by contemporary projects. In an industry where many suppliers compete on volume, Absolute Bathrooms has chosen a different path – one shaped not only by products, but by expertise, adaptability and an enduring understanding of the materials at the heart of its craft.
