Reliability and Stock and the FBP Model
Interview with Brian Pullicino; Proprietor, FBP
In the active environment of Malta’s construction industry, the completion of any project – from a
residential block to a major hotel – relies on a complex, often unseen supply chain. Behind the visible
craftsmanship lies a critical foundation of materials, tools, and fittings; delivered reliably and on time.
For nearly four decades, Firm Brian Pullicino, known as FBP, has been a steadfast engine of
this foundation. What began in 1985 as a one-man enterprise, sourcing ironmongery goods
locally and selling them to shops, has matured into a premier distribution powerhouse;
serving contractors, retailers, and major projects across the Maltese islands.
This is the story of a business built on familial loyalty, an intuitive understanding of the tradesman’s
needs, and a strategic vision of being an indispensable partner in the build process.

FBP is, at its heart, a classic blueprint of entrepreneurial grit meeting market opportunity. It began with the determination of a 17-year-old Brian Pullicino, who started building his trade network with the guidance of his father – a man with years of experience in the industry. Relying on him as his trusted mentor, Brian’s initial role was precisely that: a buyer and seller, operating as a one-man show. “I would buy everything local… and sell into these shops,” he recalls, a straightforward formula that required instinct, negotiation, and relentless effort.
LAYING THE GROUNDWORK: FROM LOCAL AGENT TO BUSINESS FOUNDER
The pivotal step from mobile sales agent to established business came with adulthood and a driver’s license. Upon turning 18, Brian acquired his first van, marking the symbolic start of his fully independent enterprise. This mobility allowed him to deepen relationships and respond directly to shopkeepers’ needs, solidifying his reputation. His early success quickly proved the venture’s potential. Before Jong, his father joined him, and thus the family-led culture that would become the bedrock of the company was formalised; transforming a one-man operation into a collaborative family enterprise poised for growth.
Growth was organic and demand-driven. Starting from a garage in Zabbar, the company expanded its premises twice, each move accommodating a growing inventory and team. Early hires included a part-timer, then a deliveryman and storekeepers, freeing Brian and his father to focus on sales and sourcing.
Around this time, Josette – Brian’s wife – also began lending a hand with administration, quietly providing the operational support that allowed the business to expand. Her presence, steady and dependable, became a quiet anchor in those formative years.

For years, the model remained focused on local sourcing and supplying the island’s retail shops. And as Brian’s ambitions required a more complex business model, he began attending international fairs to source products more strategically, selecting brands that offered genuine value for money and uncompromised quality. This shift marked a significant turning point, opening avenues for direct imports and allowing FBP to control quality, pricing, and availability more directly.
STRATEGIC EVOLUTION: FROM IRONMONGERY TO A ONE-STOP SHOP
The firm’s product evolution tells the story of Malta’s own construction boom. Starting with basic ironmongery, FBP proactively expanded into adjacent, high-demand categories. Brian observed the differing market rhythms, noting that plumbing generates recurring demand for replacements and updates, whereas electrical installations are more permanent. This practical insight guided his strategic diversification into both sectors to build a resilient, full-cycle offering for his clients.

An additional and highly transformative expansion was next driven through generational succession. The entry of his children, Bernard and Erica, into the business provided the catalyst and the capability for a profound leap forward. Bernard, who had spent summers and weekends in the warehouse since boyhood, possessed a specific, driving passion for tools and appliances. His deep-seated interest was not just in selling them, but in understanding their application and quality. This focus led FBP to secure the exclusive Maltese distributorship, amongst others, for Total Tools; a globally respected brand renowned for its obsessive product testing and ergonomic design. “Their genius is in the testing,” Brian explains, valuing a corporate philosophy where every tool is validated for durability and performance, aligning perfectly with FBP’s own quality ethos.
Concurrently, Erica brought a complementary strength to the family enterprise. Having graduated in Business and Marketing, and joining the company full-time eight years ago, she began applying formal commercial discipline to its growth. Her role in systematising sales operations, managing client accounts, and enhancing the company’s professional interface allowed FBP to scale its operations seamlessly to meet the demands of larger contractors and institutional clients. Together, Bernard’s product-centric vision and Erica’s operational expertise transformed the business, enabling it to seamlessly scale up to its ambitions.
“(TOTAL’s) genius is in the testing”
Today, FBP’s sprawling showroom and warehouses stock an immense range of over 10,000 product lines. The portfolio now encompasses everything from PPR and Push-Fit plumbing systems, electrical conduits and comprehensive safety gear, to professional-grade hand tools, power tools, and building consumables. Indeed, “when contractors come to us, they hardly need to go anywhere else,” Brian explains.
This “one-stop shop” model is a powerful value proposition for busy contractors, saving them critical time and logistical complexity. The company supports this with vast, purposefully maintained warehousing – over 2,000 square metres across multiple locations – kept purposely full to maximise immediate availability for small to large projects alike.
THE OPERATIONAL PILLARS: STOCK, SERVICE, AND FAMILY
FBP’s competitive edge rests on three interconnected pillars. First is logistical mastery. In an import-dependent market, maintaining a huge inventory such as that of FBP requires foresight and financial commitment.
“Stock replenishment and management requires planning from months ahead,” Brian explains; a discipline that ensures contractors can rely on FBP to have the materials needed to keep a project on schedule. This reliability is crucial for the “bigger entities whose needs are highly quantitative, and immediate.”
The second pillar is service intelligence. FBP’s service extends beyond mere transaction. Sales staff, many with decades of tenure, provide practical advice to both seasoned contractors and DIY homeowners, explaining product applications and ensuring correct usage. The company facilitates commerce for large clients with structured accounts and_ delivery-to-site services, often at street level for convenience. This deep-seated culture of support has fostered exceptional loyalty and a reputation that now attracts tender inquiries from major corporations and government entities directly.
The third, and perhaps most defining pillar, is the familial ethos evident in the team’s notable stability, with many having been part of the company for 15, 20, or even 25 years. “We’re not uptight with each other,” Brian explains, describing an environment built on practical trust and autonomy.

CONSOLIDATING THE LEGACY: A FAMILY ENTERPRISE FOR THE LONG TERM
This focus on mutual respect has fostered a tight-knit, experienced crew that forms the reliable backbone of daily operations, and it mirrors the successful succession plan now in motion. Brian oversees general management, his daughter Erica applies her business and marketing background to sales and operations, and his son Bernard drives the tools division and key supplier relationships such as that with Total. This seamless generational continuity promises fresh energy while honouring the values on which the business was built.
Approaching 40 years in business, Brian’s vision for FBP is one of strategic consolidation. “We consolidate what we have,” he says, explaining that the firm’s growth strategy is to focus on continuing to deepen their expertise and service within their existing vast portfolio.
“when contractors come to us, they hardly need to go anywhere else”
The trajectory of FBP is now inextricably linked with that of its clients. As Malta’s skyline and infrastructure have advanced, so too has this firm, growing from a supplier into a staple resource for the industry. From a teenager with a van to a market-leading distributor, Brian Pullicino’s decades-long journey demonstrates how deep product knowledge, adaptive strategy, and an unwavering commitment to serving the trades can build an enduring legacy. Behind him, every step of the way, has been Josette – his partner in life and, quietly, in business.
In the competitive world of construction supply, FBP has built its success on the tangible fundamentals that contractors value most: the certainty of stock, the depth of expertise, and the trust earned through decades of consistent partnership. This focus on reliability – always having the right tool on the shelf and the right advice on hand – demonstrates that the strongest foundations for growth are poured from trust, consistency, and family.
