Joseph Giordano, the founder and owner of JG Gypsum Works, has been in business for over 16 years.
He had started working in an unrelated field – in the kitchen of a fast food pizza place, however the fast paced and dynamic environment was not enough for him to overcome the repetitive nature of the work. And the artistic nature of gypsum material was a significant factor which had attracted him to this line of work.
Joseph credits his experience in the food industry with teaching him the value of customer service and dealing with people, skills which would later help him set up his current business.
Joseph’s next career move led him to aluminium works, which also resulted in disappointment for him, due to the routine nature of the job.
“Apertures are apertures. There is little variance from one job to another; I needed to use my inventiveness, creativity and problem-solving, and these skills are hardly required in that field,” he explained. Feeling thus constrained by these limitations to his creativity, Joseph decided to change his career path once again and took a job with a company which specialised in gypsum works. When he started working with gypsum, he immediately connected with the creative element of the job – since each gypsum project is unique, Joseph was able to unleash his creativity, making him passionate about his work. “I was immediately excited by this job and I soon realised that I was made for this field. Soon after mastering the skills required for gypsum works, I acquired the basic tools and started my own business,” he said.

Joseph’s first job was commissioned by a friend, who had already seen some of the work he had carried out himself, under his previous employment. “I exceeded my friend’s expectations and in no time, the word had spread – particularly about the work quality and respect for deadlines. More jobs followed,” Joseph recounted. While his first job got his foot in the door, the one that made his company’s name was the job which commissioned him to do all the gypsum works for a block of 16 apartments. “I literally worked around the clock to get the job done to standard and on time. It required a lot of time and effort on my part, but the sacrifice really paid off. This was the job that really consolidated my reputation in the sector,” he recalled.

What had started out as a one-man-show in 2006, has now become JG Gypsum Works – a thriving business, renowned for quality and creativity in gypsum services. Since its inception, the company has completed small and large projects, including developments, hotels, flats, and villas. Joseph’s own father is now also employed by the company to take care of HR and staff matters, project management and liaising with clients. The company currently employs five people and has a 90 sqm garage for storing enough materials, to complete the gypsum works for an entire apartment, at any given time. “This means that we can proceed with jobs without needing to stop and get materials. In addition, we are looking at expanding our warehousing space, due to the increase in workload,” he added.

Today, JG Gypsum Works offers a range of gypsum services, including gypsum boards, insulation, partitioning, gypsum shelving, moisture-resistant boards, outer sheets and bulkheads.

With Joseph’s extensive experience, he can also support clients by offering professional advice about the type of materials to use and how to best use the space. The company offers its services to clients across Malta and Gozo, serving various sectors, including industrial, commercial, and residential.

One of the significant features that sets JG Gypsum Works apart from their competition is their focus on delivering a high quality job. In line with this core value, the company only uses top-notch equipment, produced by market leading brands like Hilti. “The use of this equipment really makes all the difference and it shows in the end result of the work.

For similar reasons, we also use material boards by Techno Gyps in Bulgaria and Knauf in Germany as well as paints by Sigma,” Joseph explained. He added that despite the company’s growth, he still keeps a close eye on maintaining the quality standards he has become renowned for. “I frequently go on-site to see how the works are proceeding and when I am not satisfied I make the team redo the work. I simply cannot abide workmanship that is below our required standards,” he passionately tells us.
Reliability is a big issue in Malta, so we are keen to assure our clients of this and we regularly keep them informed about the progress of their projects
Punctuality is another key core value for JG Gypsum Works which their clients are all too happy about. ”If we say that the works are starting on a particular day, we stick to it and ensure that we adhere to the deadlines we have been given by our clients. Reliability is a big issue in Malta, so we are keen to assure our clients of this and we regularly keep them informed about the progress of their projects”, he emphasised.

J.G. Gypsum Works is currently carrying out all the gypsum works for an elderly people’s home called Villa Anna Theresa in the heart of Ta’ Giorni. “This is a very unique property. It looks small from the outside but upon entering, one is impressed by the massive property, with a surface area of some 3,000 square metres. This also means that the development is a large one and has considerable requirements for gypsum works, including partitioning, soffits and bulkheads. We are proud to have been entrusted with this job and are keen to exceed expectations, once again,” he concluded.
