Interview with Doreen Cutrona; Managing Director, Idroplast Manufacturing Ltd
In the heart of Malta’s manufacturing sector, Idroplast Manufacturing Ltd. stands out as a company that specializes in creating high-quality water tanks, artificial turf, netting, and more for households, contractors, and industries.
Known for their innovative use of food-grade polyethylene, Idroplast ensures its products are durable, safe, and algae-free—qualities that set them apart in the market. This commitment to excellence, combined with a focus on sustainability and customer-centric service, has made Idroplast a trusted name both locally and internationally.
The driving force behind this success story is Doreen Cutrona, the Managing Director, whose vision and dedication have turned Idroplast into a household name in Malta and beyond. Doreen’s journey with Idroplast began in 2008, the year the company was founded. “When we first started, the focus was simple: creating reliable, high-quality water tanks,” Doreen recalls. “Over the years, we’ve grown significantly, not only in terms of our product range but also in how we approach sustainability and client service.”

Idroplast initially catered to local clients, manufacturing water tanks from food-grade polyethylene. “The utilisation of such material is essential for health,” Doreen explains. “Water tanks store potable water, used for drinking, cooking, and washing. Materials commonly used in the past, and still sometimes used elsewhere, like fibreglass, allow algae and bacteria growth, which our polyethylene tanks completely eliminate.”
“The manufacturing process, known as rotational molding, ensures that the tanks are seamless, durable, and uniform in thickness”
Idroplast takes pride in its rigorous quality standards. “We hold conformity certificates for all our raw materials,” she says. “These can be shared with clients to give them peace of mind.” The manufacturing process, known as rotational molding, ensures that the tanks are seamless, durable, and uniform in thickness. “This method not only strengthens the product but also minimizes risks in stress-concentrated points,” Doreen adds. This is what we reckon to be the primary factor in allowing Idroplast to release its products at such quality standards, and yet at such well-costed values.
“Our tanks are readily available across Malta’s hardware stores, making them accessible to contractors and homeowners alike”
The company caters to a diverse clientele, including households, contractors, and hardware stores. “Our tanks are readily available across Malta’s hardware stores, making them accessible to contractors and homeowners alike,” Doreen says.
For large-scale projects, Idroplast provides personalised consultations, helping clients choose the ideal tank models for their needs. “For apartment blocks with more than four units, we recommend smaller 500-litre tanks instead of 1,000 litre ones for better practicality,” she notes.

Beyond water tanks, Idroplast offers underground models for wells and swimming pools, each backed by a 15-year guarantee. Contractors benefit from Idroplast’s free delivery service, using the company’s fleet of well-maintained vans. “This service ensures our products reach project sites efficiently and in top condition,” Doreen explains. Idroplast’s product line has expanded significantly over the years. “Originally, our range of water tanks started off from 300 litres,” Doreen recalls.
Now, our range starts at 60 litres and goes up to 5,000 litres, catering to a variety of needs, from residential properties to boats, to farming, to large developments.” The smallest tanks, particularly the 60-litre models, are a hit among boat owners. The company’s portfolio also includes traffic barriers – available in New Jersey and stackable designs, buoys and berthing boats, traffic cones, septic tanks, and agricultural water tanks. “Our agricultural tanks are a game-changer,” Doreen states. “They replace traditional built walls, eliminating annual maintenance and reducing bacterial and fungal risks.” Aesthetic and functional innovations have been key to Idroplast’s success. “All our products are coloured while being manufactured,” Doreen says. “This makes them scratch-resistant, as the colour becomes part of the material itself.”

Idroplast has also ventured into artificial turf and netting. “Our artificial turf is of exceptional quality, with 20,000 stitches per square meter,” Doreen notes. “It’s ideal for roundabouts, green walls, and private gardens.” The company’s netting solutions, including agricultural shading nets and industrial windbreakers, are made from UV-treated HTPE monofilament material, backed by a seven-year guarantee. “We offer custom-made netting, sewn to specific sizes at our premises,” she adds. Sustainability is a cornerstone of Idroplast’s operations. “We’ve recently expanded into recycling,” Doreen reveals. “We process post-industrial plastic waste into regranulated raw materials, which are then exported for reuse in new products. This initiative aligns with our commitment to the circular economy and reducing landfill waste.” Doreen is passionate about growing this aspect of the business. “We plan to invest more in our recycling division,” she says. “It’s our way of contributing to a greener future.”
Idroplast’s versatility extends to manufacturing tender boats, buoys, and water pump covers, available through hardware stores or directly from their factory. Despite this diversity, water tanks remain the company’s flagship product. As a family-run enterprise, Idroplast values its people as much as its products. “Six of our staff members are family,” Doreen shares. “My husband Gaetano oversees operations, while our children—Christian, Alessio, Federica, and Luca—handle engineering, project management, office administration, and IT, respectively.” The company employs over 20 staff, several of whom have been with Idroplast since its inception. “This loyalty means a lot to us,” Doreen says. “We’ve also invested in training foreign workers, ensuring they meet our high standards.”
