Cavallaro Design: Bespoke Interior Design Services
Interior design is the art of transforming an empty or outdated space into a beautiful, functional and comfortable living or working area that meets the individual client’s requirements. The difference between a run-of-the mill designer and a professional one, centres round prioritising a bespoke approach tailored to the client’s preferences, lifestyle, and budget. With a declining footprint, the role of interior design can also help maximise a property’s dimensions, thus also enabling the same space to be used for a wider variety of functions.
Cavallaro Design’s personalised approach ensures that every design element, from the furniture and upholstery to the lighting and materials, reflects the client’s preferences, budget and needs.
“Psychology is a big part of interior design. The success of the project depends largely on the designer’s understanding of the client, his lifestyle, character and culture. These elements will deeply influence design considerations ranging from countertops, to choice of materials, colours, furniture elements and upholstery,” Karl said.

“considerations which weigh in on the design also include the client’s relational state (single or family), pet ownership, use of the outdoors, hosting guests, client’s mobility levels and environmental awareness”
Of course, considerations which weigh in on the design also include the client’s relational state (single or family), pet ownership, use of the outdoors, hosting guests, client’s mobility levels and environmental awareness. “Safety and practicality are core concepts to every professional designer. Making the end product look and feel good is the crux of the matter in interior design,” Karl added.
Cavallaro Design is a bespoke interior design organisation based in Malta. Founded and run by Karl Cavallaro, an interior designer with over a decade of experience, the organisation provides customised interior design solutions for residential and commercial clients, working with a client group of architects, developers, and homeowners.
What makes Cavallaro Design stand out is its dual approach to service. The firm offers a range of interior design services, from the standard 2D plans with spatial locations, furniture, electrical points, lighting plans, gypsum, and unique ceiling features to the more elaborate fully fledged services of creating a bespoke environment from scratch.
Karl understands that project management is an essential part of the interior design process. He often finds himself acting as a bridge between the developer and the end-user, ensuring that the design is suited to the client’s needs, which can save money on additional expenses and provide a superior product that can be sold at a higher profit margin.
“Apart from my interaction with clients’ architects, I work closely with contractors and tradespeople, visiting the site regularly and communicating directly with them,” Karl said.

Cavallaro Design’s bespoke approach starts with coffee meetings to get to know the client’s personality, culture, and lifestyle. This enables Karl to understand the client’s requirements and eventually create a customised design that meets their needs. The plans are then easily readable by tradespeople, workmen, and craftsmen, ensuring that the design is executed flawlessly and efficiently.

One of the challenges of interior design is the discrepancy between the plans and the actual building. “This is why I prefer to be involved from a property upon the promise of sale. This enables me to work directly with the architect and the developer in order to ensure the accurate implementation of plans, as per actual measurements,” Karl said, adding that in such cases he usually goes on site during the project’s construction phase to take laser measurements of the building. “This helps to identify any issues at the outset, even before the construction begins. This saves clients and developers time and money,” he explained.
Throughout his career in interior design, Karl has worked on a number of projects which he is particularly proud of, including most recently a high-end three-bedroom apartment in Swieqi. “It was a pleasure to work on this project – the brief for this space was to design a practical, elegant and plush apartment, suited to a fast-paced lifestyle. I really enjoyed bringing together the aesthetic and practical elements on this,” he added.
Karl also recently worked on the interior design for a double level villa in Florence, despite never having visited the site or the city, for that matter. “I received the verified measurements and held various virtual meetings with the client and I carried out all the work remotely,” he said.

In addition to residential properties, Cavallaro Design also does interior design for commercial offices. “Nowadays offices are focusing on having more communal spaces. We are noticing a trend of hot-desking and team reconfiguration and the design elements of the space need to take these things into consideration,” Karl explained.

Karl’s strong relationships with major local suppliers are another strongpoint for Cavallaro Design and its clients. His suppliers include carpenters producing customised furniture locally as well as in Sicily. Other suppliers specialise in fabrics and upholstery including curtains and other soft furnishings.
